They might be out of order, as in your book; there might be duplicated TOC entries, missing TOC entries, etc. I've seen books where two different chapters had different numbers, but the same title; and other books, vice versa. It's quite acceptable to fix such errors. There's no good reason to retain these, or any other, obvious typesetting mistakes. The question to ask is, Is this what the author would have intended? If the answer is an obvious No, then fix the problem. If in doubt, use your own judgment, or just leave the problem as-is. Some submitters fix obvious mistakes, then include a transcriber's note at the end of their submission listing what was fixed. That's entirely up to the submitter. For those who don't like it, well... "Like I need their... etc." But Alan might like the process I use. Firstly and hardly relevantly, I scan using Scansoft Omnipage, which is becoming pretty good nowadays. Originally it came in a fairly crippled package with my scanner, but I now have Omnipage Pro 16. I couldn't possibly afford it at pro prices, but recently there was a really tempting special, so I blew my pension and now things work pretty well, especially when I use my nice new digital camera instead of the scanner of the same brand with which the crippleware came. (Pretty good scanner for the money too!) Funnily enough, the OCR works fine even when the photo is too dark for me to read. In fact I have almost given up enhancing the pictures because that often seems to INCREASE the errors. What my eye sees and what the OCR works on seem to be more than slightly discrepant. The only time I do an illumination adjustment is when the pic is too dark for me to define scanning zones. Usually the automatically defined zones are very good, but some tricky books foul them up so badly that It pays me to do them manually. Which of course is just what Alan wanted to know! Break my heart... BREAK my heart! But to get back to why I am telling you some of this: I feed my OCR output to Word or Open office writer, although DOC or equivalent files are not generally as welcome as HTM or TXT. The reason I do so is that I then can ignore the original pagination, which usually is of little significance anyway. (Who cares whether Heathcliffe kisses her on pp 162-171 or on 391-408?) It only matters when there are cross references in the text, and in bad cases I even change such cross references to section or figure numbers, which is what they should have been in the original. I have not yet worked on an example of where page numbering constituted a significant message in the author's theme, so I remain about as repentant as Herodes Mordax on boxing day. None the less, I do as a rule insert headings with page numbers, thugh they do not as a rule match the original. Anyway, during the proofing and formatting I convert all the relevant headings, whether section headings, chapter headings or whatever they may be, to Heading formats of convenient levels. If the book has many nested topics this is important, because it permits one to create multiple TOCs of different levels of detail. Similarly I convert Figure numbers to captions for purposes of TOCing. When all is done and I have a satisfactory DOC or FTF or the like with TOCs and TOFs etc (I generally omit indexes because searching a text for keywords is easy on a computer and the labour is out of proportion to the reward. Good luck and thanks to anyone who feels tempted to update any of my efforts. (As if I...) Next I do an automatic conversion to HTM (filtered if you are using a recent Word) and TXT files. This is easy, but does not produce acceptable products. However, conversion of the TXT files is very easy. It takes a couple of global replaces of paragraph endings with doubles and automated insertions of line wrappings with single paragraph endings. HTM conversion would be a bit more challenging, except that TIDY plus a few fiddles can easily convert a filtered file (Word 97 does not seem to need any such distinction; it is a more recent Office innovation) into a product that meets PG technical specs, looks good and matches the format you created closely enough for jazz. And it does not matter WHAT the original TOC looked like. In case anyone missed the point, by using the automated tools one can save a LOT of labour, especially if, like me, you are inclined to overlook fiddly bits; and heaven knows: very few things involve bits as fiddly as OCR and proofing!
